Kokyu is a bowed lute. It originally had three strings and is played upright. It lost popularity as part of a traditional ensemble, although a four stringed version developed in Okinawa has helped to bring it back into traditional music. Artists include Seikin Tomiyama, Koji Inogawa, Masayasu Mishina, Keiko Abe, Hatsuko Kikuhara and Mitsue Yokoi.
