Product Description
Brazilian songs before samba. From around 1920, musicians in Brazil began to develop their own unique culture. An important starting point was a project called Modern Art Week, held at the Civic Centre in Sao Paulo in February 1922. Artists from a range of fields, including literature, music and art came together to move away from the Western Europe dominated direction, and towards a new Brazilian perspective. Music including Modinha and Lundu, that had first appeared in the 18th century, gained more attention, while traditional folk songs were transcribed and new songs created in these old styles. In the 1950s, guitarist Clara Petraglia reproduced the songs from this period, recording for an American record label, in 1955 and 1980. This CD is both of those albums, released for the first time. Comes with extensive notes in Japanese.
