Product Description
Goze, were blind, or partially blind, Japanese women, who earned their living as itinerant musicians. Haru Kobyashi is said to be the last goze, who died in 2005 at the age of 105. Kobayashi became blind at three months, and by the age of eight started her career as a goze, singing and playing shamisen. She continued until 1978, travelling around Niigata, Yamagata and Fukushima Prefectures. In 1978 she was made a Living National Treasure as the solo retainer of the goze tradition. This album was recorded when she was 96 years old in 1996.
