Ichimaru, (1906-1997) is a legendary singer, and geisha. Together with another geisha, Katsutaro Kouta, they created the 'Katsu-Ichi Era'. She trained as a singer and shamisen player, in hauta, kouta, and traditional folk music. She made her first record in 1931, Chakkiri Bushi, and performed for Japanese troops at home and abroad. After the war, she became interested in American music, particularly jazz, and had a big hit, Shamisen Boogie-Woogie, composed with Ryoichi Hattori.
