Kamishibai, the tradition of storytelling with pictures, dates back to the 12th century. It disappeared after the Heian period, returning 800 years later in the early 20th century. It was popular in the 1930s until the advent of television. A Kamishibaya (kamishibai narrator) would stand on street corners with sets of illustrated boards placed on a miniature stage. Featured Kamishibaiya include Kasei Umeda and Masao Moroshita.
