Product Description

Goze were blind women musicians, who date back to medeival Japan. During the the Edo period, (1600-1868) they were organized into various organizations, including Edo (Tokyo) Osaka, Niigata (Echigo) and Nagano. From the Edo period goze groups formed throughout Japan, in Kyushu, Yamagata, Fukushima, and throughout the Kanto region. The last famed goze was Haru Kobayashi, who died in 2005, aged 105. Atsuko Koseki studied under Naoko Kayamori, a performer of Echigo Goze, who was the last disciple of Haru Kobayashi.
