This CD features two leading geomungo (Korean zither) ensembles. Geumyul Akhoe is under the leadership of Lee She-Hwan, the first player to perform two North Korean pieces, Chulgang and First Bonghwa, included on this CD. The other group, Imjeon Geomungo Ensemble, are led by Lee Jae-Hwa, and are known for their experimental side, re-inventing eight and nine string geomungo for use in new modern compositions. The Geomungo was a revered instrument among the Korean literati, with most old manuscripts being written for it. Only relatively recently has it been overtaken by the gayageum. Listen to all tracks.
