Product Description
The Japanese are some of the most avid collectors and enthusiasts for all types of music. One such collector of African music is Yoshiki Fukasawa, who has already compiled the exemplary Palmwine Music of Ghana, 50 tracks from rare and original 78rpms. This one is even better. Like its predecessor it comes in a beautifully packaged CD sized box with extensive liner notes and rare photos (including the record labels) in a very neat book. It is also compiled from original 78s owned by Fukasawa. The added bonus is this time all the notes are translated into English (we did the translations, so I know how thoroughly they are researched!). As the subtitle suggests, the album guides the listener through a formative and iconic period of Congolese music, beginning with the first ever records in 1946 to have the word 'rumba' printed on the label. Fukasawa details the change from the first rumba to what he calls 'real rumba' from 1952. We learn more about already legendary musicians including Wendo, Dewayon, Kabaselle, Rochereau and Franco, and the evolution of groups such as L'African Jazz. The stories behind the record labels and producers including Ngoma, Olymypia, Opika and Loningisa are explained in some detail. There's even an outline of the lyrics in English, transcribed by ear from the original Lingala. The tracks are essentially arranged in chronological order, although certain key artists are sometimes grouped together to demonstrate how they and other related musicians developed and interacted. Released by the label of the wonderful Tokyo record store El Sur run by the knowledagable Takashi Harada. All in all, a brilliantly put together document of this trailblazing period of African music history.
