Product Description
Junji Hirose is an improviser who has been playing since the 1980s. He devised an instrument he called Self-Made Sound Instrument (SSI), that scatters noise from a combination of tools and objects. In 1989, Hirose recorded a duo album, Silanganan Ingay, with Yoshihide Otomo on turntables. In 2022, after more than 20 years they have released a second duo album of SSI and turntables. Three live performances, recorded at 'Pool' in Tokyo on June 6th 2021. Otomo uses two turntables, to create a writhing, wild sound. Hirose performed on his self-made instruments, version 4 (SSI4) set on two bicycle wheels, when two air compressors were used to create a strong flow of air onto PE tape. Another instrument, SSI6, is used to directly hit the microphone from an air compressor to create a violent noise like a storm, called no-instrument air noise (NIAN).
