Peking Opera or Jingju (Capital Opera) is one of about 360 different kinds of Chinese opera. Originally developed in the second half of the 19th century, Peking Opera was very popular during the late Qing dynasty, suffering during the Cultural Revolution, afterwhich it regained popularity but after the opening of China under Deng Xiaoping had to compete with the influx of Western culture. In recent years, a new generation, such as Zhao Qun, have been revitalising Peking Opera, and the more ancient Kunqu opera. Hardback book style packaging and extensive liner notes in English.
