Kamishibai, the tradition of storytelling with pictures, dates back to the 12th century. It disappeared after the Heian period, returning 800 years later in the early 20th century. It was popular in the 1930s until the advent of television. A Kamishibaya (kamishibai narrator) would stand on street corners with sets of illustrated boards placed on a miniature stage. Featured Kamishibaiya include Kasei Umeda and Masao Moroshita.

Some of the best known Kamishibai. The Kamashibaiya would often ride into a neighborhood with a stage hooked onto the back of his bicycle. Built into the stage was a chest of drawers containing sweets. He would pull out his hyoshigi (wooden clappers) to annouce he had arrived and children would come running. The Kamishibai cards were hand-drawn and he would tell the story from prompts on the back of the cards. Artists include Kasei Umeda, Masao Morishita and Harumi Ichiryusai.

Mono-uri and Tanka-uri - street vendors, emerged in the Heian period (794-1185) and by the Muromachi period in the 14th century were a common sight. They sold everything from medicine to food, toys, and tools. By the Edo period, increasing competition forced them to wear colourful clothes and develop humerous sales pitches and perform various antics to stand out from the others. This CD includes the selling of clams, natto, sardines, udon, sweets, oil, bananas, sweet potato and chestunts.
