English subtitles, Region Code 2, NTSC, 233 minutes. NHK and The Theatres of Japan Arts Council have collaborated to bring you the complete Chushingura. Includes archive footage stored by the National Theatres and NHK.

Kanadehon Chushingura is one of the most famous Japanese stories, based on the true story of the revenge of forty seven ronin, or masterless samurai, on the death of their master. Although the actual incident took place between 1701 and 1703, the authors, Takedo Izumo II, Miyoshi Shoraku and Namiki Senryu, set the play in the Muromachi period (1333-1568) to avoid censorship. The main story concerns the daimyo Enya Hangan who is goaded into striking a senior lord, Ko no Morono. As this is a capital offence in the shogun's palace, Hangan is ordered to commit seppuku, or ritual suicide. With his dying breath Hangan tells his chief retainer Oboshi Yuranosuke that he wishes to take revenge upon Morono. Forty seven of Hangan's masterless samurai, ronin, make plans and finally storm Morono's Edo mansion and kill him before commiting seppuku themselves at Sengaku-ji temple in Edo.

The play opens with the dramatic opening of forty seven beats of the ki, one for each of the heroic ronin. Other famous scenes include Denchu Ninjo, Bloodshed within the Palace, when Morono hurls insults at Hangan and Enya Hangan Seppuku, the scene of Hangan's ritualistic death.

Price: 56.99

Puppet theatre can be found in many cultures, but few can match bunraku for sophistication. The puppets are manipulated by three puppeteers, who perform with a narrator and musical accompaniment. The puppets laugh, cry and show every human emotion, enacting tragedies of the past. This DVD features two national treasures, one a puppeteer, the other a narrator.Tamao Yoshida (born 1919) was one of the great master puppeteers of bunraku. He is credited as being a major reason for bunraku maintaining its status as the world's most highly developed form of puppet theatre. Born in Osaka, where bunraku itself originated in the 17th century, Tamao started to study the art of the puppeteer aged 14. He did odd jobs while learning from and watching the masters of the time. His study was interupted by the war, but he returned to become at first a left-arm manipulator, then leg manipulator and finally head puppeteer (it takes three people to operate a full sized bunraku puppet.) Tamao is known for his calm stage presence. The Inamori Foundation recognized him in 2003 as the Kyoto Prize Laureate in Arts and Philosophy. Born in 1923, Sumitayu Takemoto is a Living National Treasure of bunraku. His late father, Sumitayu VI, was also a designated Living National Treasure. True performing ability for a gidayu or narrator is all important in bunraku and Sumitayu Takemoto displays all the necessary attributes in abundance. It requires many years of training and is remarkably virtuosic drawing on dynamics, power and a huge vocal and pitch range, almost to the limits of human possibility. Sumitayu conveys the attraction of the music and expresses the emotions of the characters.

Chapter 1 is an NHK documentary broadcast in 2001. The camera follows Yoshida and Takemoto at rehasals and back stage. This program was awarded the 'grand prix' at the 'Hi Vision International Film Festival 2001'. 49 minutues. Chapter 2 is of Tamao Yoshida and Sumitayu Takemoto performing 'Kita no Shinkawa Sho no Dan' from 'Shinju Ten no Amijima', the masterpiece of Monzaemon Chikamatsu. Performed in November 2000 at National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka. 100 minutes. Region Code 2, NTSC. Total time 149 minutes.

Bunraku - Tatakau Shamisen - Ningenkokou ni Idomu (2 DVDs)

Price: 65.99

The narrator and puppeteer in bunraku could not operate without the shamisen accompaniment. It is a close relationship of interdependancy between the three of them. The music creates atmosphere and gives tempo to the actions on stage. A good player punctuates the speech of a character and links one section to another. He does not have a score in front of him, but plays entirely from memory. Seiji Tsurusawa is generally considered the greatest shamisen player in bunraku.

Chapter 1 has three performance recitals from 2007 at the National Thetare in Tokyo. 'Akoya Kotozeme no Dan' from 'Su-Joruri - Dan no Ura Kabuto Gunki', 'Sosaku Joruri Yashichi no Shi' and 'Bunraku Gonomi - Sanbanso, Sakaya, Nozakimura'. 144 minutes. Chapter 2 is a documentary that follows Seiji Tsurusawa for two months from the first day of rehearsals to the last day for the recital featured in chapter 1. Seiji Tsurusawa became a National Treasure after this performance. 89 minutes including a 19 minute interview. Region Code 2, 233 minutes, NTSC.

The Best Selection of Bunraku - Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees Vol.1

The Best Selection of Bunraku - Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees Vol.1

Ref: FSV5424

Price: 45.99

With English subtitles and liner notes. NTSC, Region Code 2. 92 minutes. Wonderful DVD of bunraku. Bunraku, puppet theatre, dates back about 400 years. Apart from the striking puppets, the gidayu, the narrator and the shamisen player are entrancing in their roles. The gidayu takes on the role of an actor, speaking for all the characters, in a mixture of speech, chanting and song. The puppeteers work in unision with eachother, the narrator and shaimisen player.

Bunraku and kabuki share the same repertoire. Many famous kabuki plays were originally written for bunraku. Plays were originally divided into six 'dan' or acts, one act lasting between 45 minutes and 1 hour. This was later changed to five acts, with one act or dan itself divided into three parts, an opening, middle and closing. The puppets of the major characters are fairly large requiring three puppeteers to operate them. Other minor roles are operated by one pupeteer. The magic of a bunraku performance is these large and ornate puppets come to life, through the impressive team work of narrator, shamisen player and of course all of the puppeteers.

Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura- Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees, is one of the three masterpieces of Bunraku. The play was first performed in 1747 and is set during the Genji-Heike civil wars of the 12th century. The role of Yoshitsune is fairly peripheral, being the character around which his retainers and enemies act. Vol.1 has three acts - Daijo Sendo Gosho no Dan , Kitasaga no Dan and Horikawa Gosho no Dan. Yoshitsune defeated the rival Heike clan, but the shogun suspects him and sends Yoshitsune's father-in-law to ask three questions; why he sent three heads to Yoritomo, claiming they were those of Heike generals? was the precious shoulder drum given as a gift to Yoshitsune meant to persuade him to overthrow his brother?, and why he married Kyo no Kimi, a woman of Heike birth?

Performed in 2001 at the National Theatre in Tokyo by Bunsho Yoshda, Tamakou Yoshida, Kanju Kiritake, Nanbudayu Takemoto, Seitaro Tsuruzawa, Shimadayu Toyotake and others.

In Fushimi Inari, Yoshitsune flees to Kyushu. The dancer, and his lover, Shizuka-gozen, cannot accompany him on the journey, so Yoshitsune leaves the precious drum with her and Yoshitsune's men tie her to a tree. In Tokaiya, Yoshitsune and his men arrive at Daimotsu to hire a boat from Tokaiya Ginpei, who is actually a Heike general in disguise, his wife a high-ranking court lady and their daughter the child emperor Antoku.

This is an example of 'jitsu wa' - reality, of which a subcategory is Yatsushi or 'disguise'. Not knowing who Yasuke is, Yazaemon's daughter has fallen in love with him.
